I had an assignment to use Richard Russo’s novel Nobody’s Fool as an inspiration for a story. I never did figure out how I wanted it to end (which will be obvious I’m sure). Anywho, here it is:

This was a very vivid dream and location and people seemed extremely important in my dream. So please bear with me for my lengthy descriptions. And I warn you, it was an unpleasant dream so you might not want to read it in the first place.

It starts in a circular reddish orange room with something like a retractable ramp in the middle which is closed for now. Other than that, the room floor is clear.  There are a few chairs and velvet covered benches along the walls. There are five rooms branching off of the circular room like spokes of a wheel.  Each room is a different dark color. One is blood red and another is a shadowy forest green. The third is a blue, an underwater blue right before the light fades away and everything becomes black. The n there is the gray room, bleached of color. Lastly there is the room painted an ill looking yellow. (more…)

CO2 Scare

This is a dream I had last night. I’m outside my house and I know that there is a CO2 leak inside. I run inside and find my dad limp in his chair at the kitchen table. I drag him outside through the garage and go back in to rouse my mother and little brother. They are both conscious although my mother needs to lean on me a little as we go outside. I drag my father down to the end of the driveway and begin CPR. At first I was hesitant to blow into his mouth, the whole lips touching your fathers lips in what could seem like a intimate kiss is what got me. However, I quickly overcame that and was soon pressing on his chest and blowing like there was no tomorrow. My mother and brother saw that it was pointless and tried to pull me off, but I pushed them away. I just kept pounding and blowing away. Then I woke up.

For once I know where this dream came from. Yesterday I had seen something in the paper about a dog rescuing its owners when there was a CO2 leak in the house. The whole dad dead thing probably came from the fact that my dog and goldfish died recently and there are other pets who are old and starting to wind down. It also means that my dad is dead (not in the dream but in real life). Someone cut him off while he was riding his motorcycle and he couldn’t stop in time, to put it simply. Hmmm, maybe someday I’ll post more about that and him. So, going back to the dream, it may be suggesting that it is better that I wasn’t at the scene of my dad’s accident because I would flip completely out.

Okay, I know I said I was hesitant to post my work online for fear of my ideas being stolen. Well, I came up with a story I could post. Why? Because the idea has already been stolen! For one of my workshops we had to read a short story called “The Hit Man” I don’t know who wrote it because I sold the book back years ago.

The plot was this: You follow a hit man through his life. His birth, his first memory, his first child, who becomes a killer too, etc. And that’s basically it. The assignment for the class was to pick a different character and do the same thing, follow it through its life. Someone did a watermelon, another did an ant. I think there was a nurse too, but I’m not sure. I wrote about the ice cream man. I didn’t take the assignment  that seriously. The last part references “The Hit Man.” Anyway, here it is:

The Ice Cream Man

By Lauren Correy

First Memory

When the electricity goes out in the Ice Cream Man’s home, he runs to the freezer to eat all the ice cream before it melts. His parents laugh and join in.
